Sierra Nevada Nephrology Consultants

BACKGROUND

Sierra Nevada Nephrology Consultants (SNNC) is northern Nevada’s largest nephrologists group specializing in diseases and conditions that affect the kidneys and renal system. Established in 1984, SNNC consists of 10 clinical providers that operate offices in Reno, Carson City and a local vascular access center. According to the Renal Physician Association’s 2007 Benchmark Survey, SNNC ranks among the top 12% of nephrology practices nationwide in practice efficiency.

CHALLENGE

Low-patient volume, misguided accounts receivable processing and operation inefficiencies had caused SNNC to become financially stagnant, caused strict budgetary constraints and brought the medical group’s profit margins to a halt. Paper documentation dominated the office, communication among providers was difficult and disorganized and inadequate staffing created unnecessary burdens among employees. Lastly, SNNC was interested in merging with an existing nephrology practice, but unsure how to tackle the task.

OPPORTUNITY

Utilizing its core product line-up of PracticeXL, RevenueXL and TechnologyXL, DoctorsXL was able to provide revenue cycle, healthcare technology and practice management solutions for SNNC. Ultimately, removing the administrative burden, assuming accounting duties and executing technological processes enabled SNNC to function at its true potential.

In regards to technology, electronic health records (EHR) and mobile charge capturing (MobileXL, offered exclusively from DoctorsXL) reduced paperwork, ensured all patient charges were documented in real-time and enhanced dissemination and distribution of patient information among SNNC physicians and other essential healthcare providers.

Applying structure and policy to a trusted physician governance model empowered SNNC to assign responsibilities and institute better understanding and exchange of information. Strong communication assisted in smooth negotiations during the SNNC nephrology practice merger and the creation of SNNC’s state-of-the-art vascular access center (VAC).

RESULTS

SNNC experienced convincing results due to its client partnership with DoctorsXL. Not only were all physician salaries able to be increased, but the practice expanded its provider base, staff and successfully opened Reno’s one and only VAC.
